My Approach

I am a trauma-focused, relationship-centered, and strengths-based counselor. Most of my clients and colleagues describe me as someone who is steady, calm, and honest, and I often hear that others can let their guard down, relax, and feel safe in our work together.

Earning and maintaining your trust is vital for the counseling process. I take this seriously, while also appreciating laughter, celebrating successes, and finding joy along the way. I am most excited when my clients can see their own strengths more clearly, and realize that they are capable of facing and releasing past wounds, in order to grow and heal in ways that used to seem impossible.

I bring a commitment to continual learning, ethical practice, and a posture of cultural humility. I love incorporating elements of nature, somatic practices, and expressive therapies in ways that fit the needs, styles, and goals of each individual client.

I am LGBTQ+ affirming, and I am continually working to ensure that New Roots Counseling is free from bias and racism.

What to Expect

The beginning phase of counseling is focused on building the therapeutic relationship, developing trust, and working together to identify goals and a plan to reach them. Working toward your goals usually begins with building up your strengths and internal resources, as well as developing new coping tools and skillsets. Together, we will celebrate your successes and learn from what is challenging.

I hold fast to the belief that therapy is not simply a set of tools and techniques; Instead, at its core, therapy is a dynamic process rooted in an engaged and attuned therapeutic relationship. Much of the pain we experience as humans in this world is borne out of being and feeling alone. Thus, my approach to therapy is oriented to the “undoing of aloneness” as we partner together in working toward your goals.

As counseling progresses, many clients become ready to engage in more focused work to more deeply explore the roots of their current struggles. This may include using EMDR or other evidence-based approaches to process difficult and traumatic experiences. Ideally, counseling ends when you have reached your goals, and we engage in a meaningful process of celebration and closure.

I am so glad you are here.

Taking time to learn more about counseling is no small thing. I hope you can appreciate that simply by being here, you’ve already taken a huge step: acknowledging that you are ready for something in your life to be better. I believe that positive change is possible — Let’s partner together so that the changes you want can be a reality in your life.
